It's hard not to miss my family right now. My baby boy...out in Seattle. my mama, sister and beautiful nieces...in Texas. My youngest niece...in Utah.
It's hard to be away from family this time of year. Not only because of the holidays and traditions, blah blah blah...but because it is my mama's birthday on Christmas day, and it always feels a wee bit weird to not spend it with her, even though there have been several birthdays spent apart in the past many years since moving out, moving away, moving nearer, and far-er...away.
Tonight, my mother and most of my darling family is gathered in Amarillo for birthday/holiday celebration...and my mama just texted me to let me know that my niece is making Banoffee Pie. my recipe. for my mama's birthday.
This made me smile. and cry. and feel a big wave of love wash over me...all the way from Texas.

Day 125 - I love...my red hat necklace
some years back, Kaci and I took a weekend trip to New Orleans.
at breakfast one morning, a big group of RED hat society ladies came in and sat at a table near us.
they were having a jubilant time and chatted with us for a bit. we had a great time meeting those ladies, and a great time that entire weekend. it was a memorable trip.
when I decided to make a move back to Seattle in 2005 (maybe 2006) Kaci threw me a huge going away party.
as part of my going away present Kaci gave me a red hat necklace. a cowboy red hat.
a little reminder of that fabulous NOLA trip...and a little reminder of Texas.
because really, Kaci and I pretty much never give each other special gifts with only one meaning.

Day ninety-nine - I love...urban art
I've always been in love with graffiti.
good graffiti. artistic graffiti.
I'm impressed by the detail some people are able to achieve with a can of spray paint...
a few years ago, while driving around Seattle, Anna, Kathi and I came across this. Nearly every inch of this building was covered. It was like Christmas morning for Anna and I...photo candy for the taking!

Day eighty-seven - I love...laughing and giggling
My friend Kathi and I used to giggle so much that our boss would walk down the hall to our office, and quietly shut the door, because our laughter would echo all the way down the hall and to the other end of the building.
A few years ago, on a visit to Seattle, Kathi presented me with a little box of gifts. she was chuckling as she brought it to me. and as I opened it and withdrew the first prezzie, I started to laugh too. It was a rectangular block of wood with one word on it:
Kathi and I have had a kazajillion laughs together. Anna too. the three of us together form our own little circle of laughter. like a big laughter bubble that surrounds the us. Even when things get serious, Kathi, Anna and I have always been able to find a way to laugh at the sad, the frustrating, the painful. Laughter IS the best medicine. Many an afternoon resulted in sore ribs from so much laughter...tears streaming down our cheeks...
The "Giggle" block is on my book shelf in my living room. I see it every day. it makes me smile. and it reminds me of all the funny moments I have shared with my lovely friends. My Giggle block is a bit magical to me - conjuring up a different memory each time I look at it. like little sprinkles of pixie dust.

Day eighty-three - I love...Sue & Jane
I met Sue when Jane was just 7 months old, when we were both living in Southern California. we became fast friends.
a few months after we met I moved back to Seattle. and a few months after that Sue called to say she was moving to Seattle and needed a nanny.
So I became Jane's nanny for a time.
Sue and I have both moved several times in the past 16 or so years. but we've always kept in touch. We've had many opportunities to get together for a few days here and there. catch up. and watch each other's children grow into fabulous young human beings.
About two weeks ago, my beloved friend Sue lost her precious best friend brother to a sudden heart attack. My heart broke in half.
Life is fragile.
but the people we love are always the people we love. whether here, gone, moved away, lost touch.
love is the amazing thing that keeps us bound to one another.
Sue. Jane. I love you.

Day forty-two - I love...sea grass
I am in love with the smell of sea grass baskets.
the scent is completely heady; intoxicating to me.
I'd like to have enough that my home would smell like sea grass when I walk in. that would be lovely; blissful.

Day thirty-seven - I love...shooting toward the sky
so, like I said a few days ago, I love to lie down on the pavement and shoot straight up the edges of buildings, structures, etc.
I don't always lie down on the sidewalk...sometimes I just stand super close to something and crane my neck skyward and shoot...
anyway, here are some of those shots:
