Day 359...

It's hard not to miss my family right now.  My baby boy...out in Seattle. my mama, sister and beautiful nieces...in Texas. My youngest niece...in Utah.

It's hard to be away from family this time of year.  Not only because of the holidays and traditions, blah blah blah...but because it is my mama's birthday on Christmas day, and it always feels a wee bit weird to not spend it with her, even though there have been several birthdays spent apart in the past many years since moving out, moving away, moving nearer, and far-er...away.

Tonight, my mother and most of my darling family is gathered in Amarillo for birthday/holiday celebration...and my mama just texted me to let me know that my niece is making Banoffee Pie. my recipe. for my mama's birthday.

This made me smile. and cry. and feel a big wave of love wash over me...all the way from Texas.

Day 250...

This morning, I received a text that made me giggle out loud.

It was from one of my darling Texans - it read:

"Hi, lady. Are we wearing jeans today?"

To which I replied:

"Ha. Well, yes. But I think you meant this to go to someone else. :)"

And then, the glorious reply:

"Shit! You are right! Good morning Karen!"

It was the perfect way to start my Friday...with a giggle and a smile.

Day 224...

I have always loved the abandoned. run-down. discarded. neglected.

and graveyards. (but that's a later post)

partly because I can build a story; imagine the people who used to live in a place...work in a place...

and partly because I love the beauty and mystery of abandoned and neglected things.

Day 145 - I love...roadtrip part 1

I was on the road for a few days, so I didn't post.

Oh, I took my computer with me, but I never even took it out of my bag. never plugged it in. never turned it on.

It was kind of a nice change.

I'm so plugged in all the time. work. home. cell phone.

We're constantly accessible in our techno-driven society.

Of course, I still had my cell with me, but I really didn't use it much.

We left Louisville at 3:30 Thursday morning. We arrived in Texas at about 7 Thursday evening, and promptly pulled in to the Iron Horse Pub, where I was able to hug my best friend RED for the first time in a year and a half.

After a ridiculously long day on the road, which took us through St. Louis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City...driving along parts of Route 66 (which, by the way, ALWAYS makes me ecstatic!) we sipped on a couple beers at the pub, grabbed some dinner, and called it a night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
oddity of the day: somewhere between OKC and The Falls, we passed a homemade lawnmower/motorcycle contraption...with a car engine!
Day ninety-four - I love...Texas Country/Red Dirt Music
When I first moved to Texas in 2003, the first person I met was Kaci.
we were instant friends.
Kaci, born and raised Texan, is a huge Texas Country fan. and one day she said, "Cross Canadian Ragweed is at the expo center Friday. wanna go?"
I was a little reluctant, but said yes.
It was...the...best...time!
We proceeded to go to every Cross Canadian Ragweed, Kevin Fowler, Pat Green, Roger Creager concert that came through Abilene for the next several years.
we had a reputation as the girls with the best cooler at the expo center...people would come to find us, because we usually loaded it up with jello shots, and a variety of liquors and mixers.
it was a fun time spent with great friends and great music.
lately, I've been a bit nostalgic for my beloved Texas...so I've been listening to my collection of Texas Country.
and today, I discovered that Cody Canada and The Departed are playing in Lexington tomorrow evening.
so we're going.
and I'm super excited.
Day ninety-three - I love...Texas
some of the best memories of my life were made in Texas.
some of the best friends I've ever found...were found in Texas.
I love my birth state of Washington.
I love the "home" I've always felt in Kentucky.
but a piece of my heart...
will always be...
in Eastwick.
in Texas.
Day sixty-four - I love...unpacking
My home is nearly all settled now.
I unpacked all but one box yesterday, a box of sweaters...it can wait until Monday.
It looks like a home. instead of a storage unit.
This is huge, as I spent the last eight months with several things still boxed up and pushed against a wall in the second bedroom at the dungeon. (the dungeon is how I refer to the crap basement apartment we moved into last July.)
I still have a bunch of things stored in Texas...and I hope to get there soon to retrieve all those goodies, but for now...everything is unpacked, has a place, and feels comfortable and home-ish to me.
Unpacking boxes is like opening gifts on Christmas. Little surprises. "ooh I forgot I had that" moments.
It's quite happy-making.
Day forty-one - I love...boats and ships
I haven't been sailing since I was pregnant with my son - about 16 years ago - but I still have a great love of boats.
one day, I'd love to sail across the Atlantic. but for now...pictures of boats and sailing will have to suffice.
Day forty - I love...flowering things
For myself I hold no preferences among flowers, so long as they are wild, free, spontaneous. ~ Edward Abbey
Flowers don't worry about how they're going to bloom.  They just open up and turn toward the light and that makes them beautiful. ~ Jim Carrey
You belong among the wildflowers, you belong in a boat out at sea, Sail away, kill off the hours, you belong somewhere you feel free. ~ Tom Petty "Wildflowers"
Day thirty-nine - I love...shadows
A a week or so ago I wrote about my love of trees.
today I'm going to share my love of tree shadows.
About the same time I started my laughter project, I also started taking photos of tree shadows when the trees are bare of leaves.
Day thirty-seven - I love...shooting toward the sky
so, like I said a few days ago, I love to lie down on the pavement and shoot straight up the edges of buildings, structures, etc.
I don't always lie down on the sidewalk...sometimes I just stand super close to something and crane my neck skyward and shoot...
anyway, here are some of those shots:
